Getting your Christian manuscript accepted for publication starts with following submission guidelines perfectly. Here’s what Traditional Christian publishers want to see in your submission.
The Essential Components
Query Letter (1 page):
- Hook: One compelling sentence about your book
- Book details: Title, genre, word count
- Brief synopsis: What happens in your book
- Author bio: Your credentials and platform
- Professional closing
Synopsis (1-2 pages):
- For Fiction: Complete plot summary (including the ending!)
- For Non-Fiction: Chapter progression
- For Fiction: Main characters and their motivations
- For Non-Fiction: Key themes and spiritual messages
Sample Chapters:
- Usually first 3 chapters or first 50 pages
- Follow the publisher’s exact formatting requirements
- Make sure these are your strongest chapters
What Christian Publishers Look For
Theological Alignment: Christian publishing companies need to ensure your book aligns with their statement of faith. Be upfront about your theological perspective.
Quality Writing: Even the best Christian message needs excellent execution. Professional Christian publishers expect polished prose, compelling characters (for fiction), and clear organisation (for non-fiction).
Market Viability: Christian publishers are businesses. They need to believe your book will find an audience. Demonstrate the demand for your topic or genre.
Author Platform: Whilst not always required, Christian publishers appreciate authors who can help market their books through speaking, social media, or ministry connections.
Common Submission Mistakes to Avoid
- Sending simultaneous submissions to publishers who don’t allow them
- Not personalising your query letter
- Submitting inappropriate genres
- Ignoring word count requirements
- Following up too frequently
Timeline Expectations
- Initial response: 2-12 weeks
- Full manuscript request: 2-6 months for decision
- Contract negotiations: 2-8 weeks
Most Christian publishers specify their response timeline. If you haven’t heard back after their stated timeframe plus two weeks, one polite follow-up is appropriate.
But I don’t have all those things!
We understand. Submitting to publishers can be overwhelming. The good news is that Into the World Press has a very simple submissions process which involves initially answering a few key questions about your book. If we are interested, we will follow up with you, usually within 2-4 weeks, and request a sample in a Microsoft Word document. We do not require any specific formatting or a formal query letter.
